A big bucket of Halloween candy that may not be great for braces

Halloween is the one time of year when parents ease off the sugar throttle and let it go wide open. But if you wear braces, you may not be able to enjoy all of your favorites. It can also be difficult to sort it all out at the end of the night to see what you can and can’t enjoy. After all, you don’t want to end up back at your orthodontist the next morning!

If you want a great list of Halloween treats to enjoy while wearing braces, continue reading.

Chocolate’s Back on the Menu!

Chocolate is the absolute king of Halloween candy and is orthodontist-approved! Chocolate without nuts will safely melt in your mouth and won’t get stuck in the wires and bands of your braces.

It’s also lower in sugar content than some other candies. Bonus points can be received for choosing dark chocolate for its healthy dose of antioxidants and even lower volume of added sugar.

It’s Cookie Time!

While wrapped candies may dominate the Halloween space, soft-baked cookies are a great choice. These will satisfy a sweet tooth without ruining all the progress you’ve made with your orthodontic treatment. For added fun, try decorating them with frosting!

Go For the Powered Stuff!

If you absolutely must have a high-octane sugar rush, Pixie Stix and other powered sugar candies like it exist. These have been a staple of candy-collecting crusades for ages and will certainly give you the sweet, not-quite-fruity flavors you crave.

Gelatin is Creepy AND Delicious!

Is there anything more like edible slime than Jell-O? Some enterprising Halloween fanatics have also created molds you can use to make all kinds of gelatin treats. These include bats, spiders, and even a brain! If you’re a zombie for Halloween, then you know what you must do.

Don’t Forget About Cake!

Listen, there is no occasion that can’t be made better with a slice of cake, or a good frosting-slathered cupcake. Just be sure to avoid extra like sprinkles or other hard or sticky treats like gummy worms.

For added Halloween fun, try adding some whole fruit like blueberries to the mix. You can pretend you’re biting into some eyeballs like a real witch.

The important takeaway from this list is that softness and meltability are important factors. Anything hard like chips, suckers, or jawbreakers aren’t good for braces. The same can be said for candies that tend to stick in your teeth like caramel and gummies. Regardless, after Halloween night, it might be a good idea to visit your dentist just in case!
